Must-Have Supplies for Packing

When you're preparing for an international move, you'll have the option to hire a moving company that includes packing as a part of their services or do the packing yourself. If you opt for the latter, it's important to plan ahead and ensure you have all of the necessary supplies on hand, so you can get the job done as quickly and efficiently as possible when the time comes.

Here's a list of packing supplies that you won't want to be without:

Boxes

While it's obvious that boxes are must-have supplies, many people are surprised at the large number necessary for packing an entire home. A three or four-bedroom home can easily require upwards of 100 boxes, so it's important that you start collecting and purchasing boxes early. Try to gather a wide variety of sizes, as you'll want smaller boxes for heavier items like books and larger ones for bulkier, lighter items like clothing and bedding.

Brown paper or newspaper

Although newspaper is more readily available for use as a packing material, it can create a mess and even ruin some items like lampshades. The best advice is to have both types of paper on hand, so that you can wrap more delicate items in the brown paper.

Cushioning materials

To fill in the spaces between items in boxes, you'll need some type of packing material, such as foam peanuts or inflatable plastic bags. You should also plan to purchase some packing foam for protecting fragile items.

Stick-on labels

You'll have an easier time unpacking your belongings when you have large stick-on labels on the tops and sides of your boxes.

Packing or sealing tape

You can often get deals on cases of tape if you plan in advance, and you’ll likely go through several rolls to pack an entire house.

Markers

Keep about one dozen waterproof markers on hand to ensure you don't run low as you pack.

Scissors

Because scissors often become lost in the shuffle as you pack, make sure you have several pairs handy.

Notebook

As you pack, you're likely to remember things that you need to do, other items that you need to pack and so on. Keep paper handy, so you can jot down your thoughts without having to leave the room.
