So far, it has been not easy to relocate. However, it is not a lack of movers that is the problem. Instead, the restrictions on interstate travel have been put in place, both at the national and state level.

Fortunately, things are now changing. The VIC government eased COVID-19-related restrictions from October 22, 2021, for people who have received double vaccination. (Double dose vaccinations are currently mandated for any Australian planning to travel internationally).

State By State Restrictions In Australia: Can You Move From Your State?

The Australian government is enforcing entry restrictions in various states to control the spread of COVID-19. However, COVID-19 risks in each state vary, so rules governing interstate travel in Australia may change over time.

Those looking to enter New South Wales from other states may complete an NSW entry declaration form. However, officials require a form depending on the state from which you travel.

As of October 2021, you do not need an NSW entry declaration form if you are moving to the state from ACT, Northern Territory, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, or Western Australia. However, if you are relocating from Victoria, entry restrictions apply. You will have to follow the rules for interstate travellers and complete an NSW entry declaration form.

From Monday, November 1, NSW relaxed its stay at home rules. As a result, individuals or business people moving from Victoria after that date can travel to NSW for holiday or recreation.

The action you must take depends on the level of concern NSW has about your area of origin.

  • No concern: If you have not been in a restricted state for the previous 14 days, you do not need to complete a declaration form. You do not need to self-isolate either.
  • Affected area: If you have been in an affected area in the preceding 14 days, you will need to complete an entry declaration within 24 hours of entering NSW.
  • Area of concern: If you are moving from a place of high risk, you must complete a declaration form within 24 hours. You will also need to stay at your residence for 14 days after you visit the area of concern. You can only leave if you have a reasonable excuse, such as moving home, exercising or buying food.
  • Area of serious concern: If you are moving from a place of high risk, you will need to complete an NSW entry declaration within 24 hours. You will also need to self-isolate in your accommodation for 14 days and get tested for COVID-19 immediately upon entry. If you are not a resident of NSW but have been in close contact with a known COVID-19 infection, you can now enter the state. You will need to wait 14 days.
