Moving day has snuck up on you and there are still many items to cross off your list before you settle into your new home.

You really want to leave your vacant house in top condition for the incoming owners - but let’s be honest, at this stage the prospect of cleaning each room sits somewhere between swimming in crocodile-infested waters and walking on sharpened stakes.

You’re in no hurry to make this happen.

And yet, you can’t shake off the niggling sense of shame that comes with the thought of the new owners being covered in a cloud of dust when bringing in their furniture. Can you see the look of horror on their faces?

While there’s no legal requirement to clean your home for the next occupants, it’s a courteous thing to do (if your circumstances allow).

Think about the condition that you would like to find your new home in. You might give it a quick once-over, but the last thing you want is to spend the entire day sweeping and wiping away traces of the former inhabitants. You’ll feel so relieved if the bulk of this has already been done before you move.

Basic cleaning:

• Remove nails from the walls
• Sweep and mop the floors
• Dust and vacuum the carpet
• Dispose of the rubbish
• Wipe the cupboards, drawers, countertops and sink
• Clean the bathroom (including toilet, shower and bath)

If you’re feeling particularly generous and want to go that extra mile:

• Mow the lawn
• Wipe down the walls, blinds and windowsills
• Clean out the fireplace
• Wash the inside and outside of doors
• Steam clean the carpet
• Wipe the inside and outside of the fridge, freezer and stove

If you’re stuck between a rock and a hard place, because you want the new owners to walk into a clean house, but you don’t have the time or energy to do the actual cleaning (understandable!) - why not leave it to the professionals?
