Whether you move locally or overseas, Chess offers advice and expertise to make sure your belongings are properly protected during transportation. Chess uses packing and wrapping materials specially designed for different items and for all different kinds of transportation, whether by road, rail, sea or air.

Then why should I take out insurance ?

While Chess uses the highest standards of care in making sure that your belongings are properly handled and protected there is always the risk of an accident or influences outside our control which may cause damage or even loss of your belongings.

Chess takes pride and responsibility in offering you the protection you need. We offer you our skills and expertise in performing our professional services to minimize risk and in addition we offer you the peace of mind and assurance of protection against accidents and forces of nature outside our control.

Your Chess consultant will explain the risks of loss or damage during the removal and transportation of your goods until their delivery at your new home. These risks generally increase with distance and different ways of transportation. Our consultant will discuss with you the different options in insurance cover to help you understand and choose the cover that best suits your needs.

What is the Chess Protection Plan ?

The liability of a removals company is legally limited by Australian law. Details are provided in the Australian Standard Removal & Storage Contract. Outside this liability the company cannot accept responsibility unless you have taken out Transit or Storage Insurance.

To offer a seamless service Chess offers its Insurance Protection Plan and Marine Insurance for domestic and overseas removals to protect your belongings against risks outside of our control.

The Chess Protection Plan provides cover during packing and loading by the removals crew and ends when all items have been unpacked and placed into position by the removals crew at your new home. The first 30 days of storage in Australia are included in the transit insurance premium.

Your Choice in the level of insurance cover ?

Depending on your needs you may choose to select either of two different levels of cover:

A. Replacement value:

This option provides protection to the level where the company, repairs, replaces, or pays an amount adequate to replace the damaged or lost item.

The total declared insured value is the replacement value of all items at the destination and is generally higher than the actual value at the time of loss.

You pay a correspondingly higher premium for this extensive cover but it gives you the additional peace of mind of knowing that in case of a loss you will not have to pay the difference between the used value and the price you pay for a new article.

Some items, generally with a limited life-span, cannot be insured for replacement value. These items can only be insured for indemnity cover as described below. Please refer to the terms and conditions on the back of the insurance declaration form for a full list of exclusions and limitations.

B. Indemnity cover.

When you take wear and tear and depreciation into account the value of your belongings is generally lower than the original purchase price or what you would have to pay today to replace these goods by new items.

If you choose indemnity cover we may repair or pay out an amount equal to today's actual value after taking into account wear and tear and depreciation.

You may choose to select Indemnity cover when you believe that over time you have had some good use and value out of these items and damage or loss of these items will not mean a major financial setback when you have to replace them.

Electrical and Mechanical Derangement

Electrical or mechanical derangement of any item is excluded from the standard insurance cover because it is normally impossible to check the proper functioning of these items before transit. In addition such items may, due to their condition or age be so fragile that normal handling may cause the equipment to malfunction.

If requested by you on the declaration form and subject to the payment of an additional premium and the age limitations set out in the Sum Insured Options, Chess can provide cover to replace the item if the item cannot be repaired to its pre removal condition.

Please note: The maximum amount payable under the cover is limited to the amount declared by you on the insurance application declaration or contract.

Limitation for Pairs and Sets

The cover for pairs of items or sets is limited to the value of each individual item in the pair or set without taking in account the loss of value of the remaining items in the set due to the loss of an individual part of that set.

If requested by you on the declaration form and subject to the payment of an additional premium, Chess will arrange full replacement cover to replace the whole set if we can not repair or replace the damaged or lost item.

It is important that you clearly nominate on the insurance application declaration or contract any items forming part of a pair or set. You must specifically nominate and declare the full replacement value, which is the maximum amount payable in the event of loss or damage.

Apply for Insurance cover under the Chess Insurance Protection Plan

To apply for insurance cover under the Chess Protection Plan you must complete and sign the Insurance Request Application form.

You will need to estimate the full value of your belongings and you must declare all special items like antiques, works of arts or curiosa and any item valued over $ 1000 as indicated on the form to make sure they are adequately covered.

The values, which you have nominated for each item on the declaration form are the maximum values payable in the event of a claim.

It is very important not to undervalue your goods as under-insurance may result in the insurer averaging your claim.

In all cases and subject to the limitations set out in the provisions on the Insurance Request Application, the maximum amount, which we will pay out for each item is the value you have declared for that item on the Insurance Request Application.
